Located at Mumbai, in the state of Maharashtra, Elephanta is an island just off the coast of Arabian Sea. Elephanta caves are situated at about 11 kms east of the Apollo Bunder. Elephanta caves are one of the oldest rock-cut caves in the India and hence they are famous because of the beautiful structures the place has. These caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Tourists from all over the world come here to visit this wonderful place.



How to Reach Elephanta Caves By Road:

Elephanta Caves are located near Mumbai. As Mumbai is business capital of India it is well connected from major parts of Maharashtra and India by road. Once you are at Mumbai you need to reach the Gateway of India. You may opt for local transport facilities like bus or taxi to reach there. From Gateway of India there are boat or ferry ride facilities to reach Elephanta Caves.

How to Reach Elephanta Caves By Train:

Mumbai is major railway junction and trains from all parts of India connected with Mumbai. If you are coming from any express trains to Mumbai you may get down at CST, Bandra or Lokmanya Nagar Junctions. From these stations you can reach CST or Churchgate by local trains. Infact from anywhere in Mumbai, you may catch a local train to CST (Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus) or Churchgate. It is a 25-30 minutes walkable distance from the CST and Churchgate railway station or 10 minutes distance if you catch a taxi, to reach the Gateway of India. From the Gateway of India, you of course can get ferry or boat facilities.

How to Reach Elephanta Caves By Air:

Since Mumbai is the major city, in Maharashtra, India; you may catch a flight for Mumbai. From an airport, irrespective of domestic or international; you can get a taxi or local bus to reach to the Gateway of India and from there of course you can get ferry or boat services, as mentioned earlier.

How to Reach Elephanta by Ferry/Boat Services

From the Gateway of India, one can get ferry or boat rides to reach Elephanta Caves. It is a one hour journey by Sea. There are two types of boats- Deluxe and Economy. Deluxe boat charges Rs. 140/- for adults and Rs. 90/- for children. Similarly Economy boat charges Rs. 120/- for adults and Rs. 70/- for children. The boats are available from 9 A.M to 5 P.M. and it will take around 1 hour to reach Elephanta Caves.
