A mosque, a dargah, a tomb for worship- whatever you call me, I am a place of devotion for the Muslims in Mumbai which has turned into a true landmark. Located off the coast in Worli the place is present in the heart of this posh and luxurious city. With an extensive architecture of both the Indian and Islamic kinds, my built and design is praised by all the odds of the culture.
I house the tomb of Sayed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari who has been a true mentor for many Islamic tribes in his times.
Haji Ali Dargah Construction
I was built in the year 1431 in the memory of Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari who was a rich businessman in the 15th century from Uzbekistan, then Bukhara. He had been known for his devotion towards his God and rituals as he had given up all the worldly pleasures and wealth just to be in Mecca and devote himself to his God. He later settled in Mumbai after travelling around the world for his good will and in an effort to get closer to God and His Preaching.
Days and Events Celebrated in Haji Ali
Fridays and Thursdays are my days. It is in those days when the shrine is visited by the devotees irrespective of caste, creed or religion just to seek the blessings of this great person who has never turned down any Gods and Their beliefs biased! There are events and cultural gatherings involving Sufi music and Qwwali performances which are witnessed inside my halls at the dargah which is visited by people around Mumbai in a huge number with commitment and respect.
The Haji Ali Dargah Design
I have a very attractive interior. The green and red chaddar covering the dargah, the silver frames on the marbled pillars, the mirror works on the pillars with blue, yellow and red, green chips have embarked a pattern which is intricately the Arabic kind. The dragh is present on the coast off the Arabian Sea near Worli and that is why when the tide sets the mosque seems to be all alone and serene in its own island.
