Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Alibaug in the Murud and Roha talukas of the Raigad district of Maharashtra. Phansad was part of the official hunting reserve of the princely state of Murud Janjira. Phansad National Park is located at a distance of only 140km from Mumbai on the low hills of the Malabar Coast towards the west of the north Sahyadri range.

Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary boasts unique vegetation with inland high altitude areas and ranks pretty high among the biodiversity hot spots of the Western Ghats ecosystem.

Phansad National Park

With southern moist bearing forests, southern moist mixed deciduous forests, and Riparian fringing forests in different parts, Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to more than 700 different types of plants as well as an exceptional range of birds, butterflies, moths, snakes, and mammal species.

The fauna of the Phansad forest includes approximately 164 different bird species, around 31 species of reptiles, more than 92 different types of butterflies, and also approximately 17 species of mammals that make Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary extremely popular among nature lovers, bird watchers, wildlife activists and also wildlife photographers.

Malabar giant squirrel, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Mouse deer, Small Indian civet, porcupine, Langoor, Bonnet, Macaque, Sambar, and Barking deer are commonly found in Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary forests along with a number of rare and endangered bird species like Yellow Footed Green Pigeon, and a variety of hornbills.

Weather at Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary

Phansad National Park has a typical climate of the Western Ghat mountain range – that is regular and heavy rainfall during the monsoon and hot and humid summer. During summer daytime temperature reaches close to 40 degrees centigrade and the average low temperature during the winter months is around 18 degrees centigrade at Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary.

With the migratory birds arriving, the winter months are the best part of the year to enjoy the wild, natural beauty, and exceptional bio-diversity of the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary. And it’s from late September to early March when Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary receives the maximum number of visitors.

    Great Article. I have visited Phansad wildlife sanctuary once in winter. There are not so much wild animals to see but its a great experience to explore the deep forest.
